Who Is Responsible For Seema's Gruesome Murder

Gurgaon: It is another young girl whose life has been snuffed out by callous in laws and an uncaring society. Seema, an ordinary name that could belong to any girl anywhere... but the story that had engulfed her for the last six years is far from ordinary .

Hailing from Kurukshetra, Seema came from a poor family and had lost her father, a railway employee, quite some time ago. Her mother painstakingly collected the finances for her marriage to Raju, living in Housing Board Colony in Sector-7 Gurgaon. Supposed to be a middle class locality, one could have hardly expected Seema to become a victim of such brutal exploitation.

Initially, her husband and in-laws harassed her with dowry demands and when she could not comply, they goaded her into prostitution. Quite obviously, she refused. On continual refusal by her, things turned bad.

On June 20th, things probably reached a head and she was doused with kerosene oil and lighted up. She ran out of the house and the neighbors managed to put out the fire, but later she succumbed to her burn injuries and was hurriedly cremated by her in-laws.

The neighbors are livid and are apparently in the know that things were so bad in Seema's family. The surprising thing is that now angry colony residents have taken to the street and demonstrate before the house and exhort the police to take strict action. Why did they not intervene while Seema was alive and try to set things right? Or did they think it was none of their business?

As members of society, responsible persons who care about morality and family values, it is only correct that courageous and firm intervention in these kinds of unpleasant situations can prevent them from escalating into full blown tragedies, as in this case.

A stitch in time saves nine..... Platitudes could have saved Seema from the fire!

Today, Seema's mother and brothers are disconsolate - they have paid a heavy price for their poverty, that was not of their making!
